Can you get pimples from the sun? Yes, definitely. And people who suffer from summer acne or yeast pimples will surely agree. It is very frustrating that as soon as the sun shines, and you want to enjoy your vacation, impurities and pustules actually appear. Why is that? What is the difference between summer acne or yeast pimples and what can you do about it?

In what ways does summer cause acne or yeast pimples?

In summer, the climate changes. And this affects your skin. For example, heat, UV radiation and higher humidity can increase sebum production. Your skin becomes oilier. On the other hand, it also affects hydration. In this sense, your skin actually becomes drier or flakier. Furthermore, your skin may thicken a bit in the summer, giving it a dull appearance and keeping impurities in the skin.

What is the difference between summer acne and yeast pimples?

With summer acne also known as Mallorca acne, you see that more impurities, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads or inflammation appear during the sunny period. The skin feels oilier and sometimes more rigid. These spots are mostly on your face, chest or back. They usually don’t itch. For example, summer acne can be caused by changes in your skin, hormones and improper skin care such as certain thick sunscreen. The causative agent is the C. acnes bacteria. (formerly known as propionibacterium acnes)

Yeast pimples are red or colorless bumps located mainly on the forehead, along the hairline, jawline or neck. These small pimples do not “come out,” there is no white head on them. Yeast pimples can be recognized because they itch more often. In fact, they are not caused by a bacteria, but by a yeast (pityrosporum folliculitis) on your skin. Heat, humidity, sweating and oily creams (such as certain sunscreens) can aggravate yeast pimples.

What can you do about pimples caused by the sun?

Fortunately, specialized skin therapists can offer various advice and treatments to help you against these annoying skin complaints.

At the Laser Clinic, we see an increase in requests for acne-related skin complaints during the summer period and immediately after the summer period.

First, it is important to find out exactly which of the two you are suffering from.

Our skin therapist will explain which creams are best to use and which are best not to use.

Here are some important tips in advance:

  • Apply with a non-clogging SPF 50 cream and repeat every 2 hours when outside. Some of Heliocare’s products and CS’s faceshields are our favorites. These provide maximum protection, soak in well and work antibacterially. So you won’t get pimples from this!
  • Use a mild skin cleanser 2x daily such as the advanced cleanser or the PHA cleanser
  • Exfoliate your skin 2-3x a week with a glycolic acid cleanser such as the foamer 5 or 15 to prevent and treat thickening of the top skin layer.
  • Hydrate your skin 2x daily with a product where hyaluron is added such as the hyal ceutic, revitalisatuin hyal and the emmagen serum. After all, the sun dries out the skin!
  • Handle the sun wisely: avoid the bright sun between 11-15 a.m.; wear a cap or hat
  • Drink plenty of water and foods with antioxidants such as vitamin C.
  • Lubricating antioxidants can also help! such as the vitamin C serums trivita and C-Ferulic. (read more in the blog on the benefits of vitamin C)

Various treatments are also available to improve the skin in a mild and appropriate way during the summer. Of course, you also want to do something to prevent summer acne or yeast pimples. Mild peels, the baby facelaser and medical microneedling with the SkinPen are suitable for this purpose, and these treatments may be eligible for reimbursement from supplementary health insurance with a medical indication. The skin therapists at The Laser Clinic are recognized by all health insurance companies.
